Cultivating Joy Through Literacy
At Black Boys Read Too, we believe literacy is a powerful, communal act that unites families and communities. Our mission is to inspire joy through reading and foster connections that help Black boys and their families thrive.
In Erie County, nearly 150,000 adults struggle with reading and writing in English, and only 46% of adults in Erie and Niagara Counties are considered proficient in literacy. Alarmingly, 10 million Americans complete 12th grade without attaining basic reading skills.
To address these challenges, we host engaging, family-friendly programs throughout Buffalo. Each event blends literacy with themes that resonate within our communities, such as: Health & Wellness, Mindfulness, The Arts, Fitness and Creativity.
Previous events include Dodgeball Tournaments, Tackle Reading Football Camps, Paint and Read sessions, Story time with local authors, and Barbershop Bookclubs, each designed to celebrate literacy while building connections.
Beyond hosting our own programs, Black Boys Read Too participates in community events by tabling and giving away free diverse books. If you’d like us to join your event or collaborate on a literacy initiative, reach out to us through our website. Together, we can inspire the next generation of readers and learners.
Let’s create spaces where Black boys and their families can flourish through the joy of reading.
