Black Boys Read Too

“We seek to address the large disparities in literacy achievement by getting books in children’s hands by any means necessary.”

The Mission of Black Boys Read Too is to break the cycle of illiteracy and encourage African American boys to foster a love for reading. We seek to address the large disparities in literacy achievement by getting books in children’s hands by any means necessary.

Black Boys Read Too was founded because we believe African American boys should be given every opportunity possible to develop literacy based skills, and immerse themselves in the joys of reading. Through our Barbershop Bookshelf Program and Literacy Pop-up Events we hope to make books more accessible to our community and inspire a new generation of lifelong readers

To Black Boys Read Too it looks like community. Our Barbershop Book Club builds community around stories of inspiration and black joy with barbers, children, caregivers, and community partners. Together we can create the very village it takes to have an impact on the lives of the youth we serve.

How Do You Define Impact?

Many educational materials and books found in classrooms often do not represent the students who read them. We work to ensure that students have access to books that are age appropriate and have an emphasis on Black protagonists, heroes and role models. We strive to include books that are written and illustrated by people of color and when needed, written in their primary language.

Culturally Relevant Reading

Education happens within the context of a larger community. Our Literacy Pop-up events extend beyond the school to help ensure students have the necessary support to do their best learning.
